If you had told me back in high school that I was going to be a long-distance runner, I would have laughed in your face. I hardly did anything active in high school. I was always a little sports challenged. It wasn’t until I arrived at college and began running with a friend that I realized how much I enjoyed running.

Over the years, I’ve had many running partners each challenging me in a new way. One such partner was Kadie Kersey. She and I taught elementary school together. After school, we’d go running and burn off some of the stress of the day. Kadie, after much pestering, finally convinced my husband and me to sign up for our first race. I really didn’t think I’d like the race dynamic, and I was so worried about being able to finish a long run. We did the Tar Heel 10-Miler in April of 2013, and much to my surprise, I loved it!

Then this year my husband and I wanted to challenge ourselves, and we signed up for our first half marathon. We ran the NCRC Classic in May of 2014. It was a challenging race since most of it was run in Umstead Park, but it was a beautiful course. I finished my first half marathon in just over 2 hours! Now we’re ready for the next half marathon – the Bull City Race Fest & Food Truck Rodeo!
